{"id":3635,"date":"2025-01-07T17:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-01-08T01:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/?p=3635"},"modified":"2025-01-16T21:24:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T05:24:50","slug":"making-trouble-women-science-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/events\/making-trouble-women-science-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Trouble: Women, Science &#038; Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IFF director Margaret Wertheim is giving a talk about the <em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> at the 2025 <strong>College Art Association<\/strong> conference as the closing event of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/thefeministartproject.org\/college-art-association\/\">Day of Panels<\/a> hosted by <strong>The Feminist Art Project.<\/strong> Each year TFAP chooses a theme: &#8220;Feminism and Art <em>and X&#8221;<\/em>. This year it&#8217;s Feminism and Art <em>and Science.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Describing their impulse, the organizer say:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Art Historian Linda Nochlin has stated that, &#8216;feminist art history is there to make trouble, to call into question, to ruffle feathers in the patriarchal dovecotes.&#8217; This event is dedicated to women who are troublemakers, and whose creative practice references science as a source of inspiration for writing, research, curating and art making.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this spirit Wertheim&#8217;s talk is titled <em>Crafting Against Patriarchy in Science and Art. <\/em>She&#8217;ll talk about her career-long experiences at the interfaces of science, feminism, and art from her days as an undergraduate physics major onward to exhibiting at the Venice Biennale and other international art venues. Finally, she&#8217;ll introduce the idea of a &#8220;Domestic Sublime.&#8221; This is the final talk of the day (3:25-4:30pm).<em> The entire day is free and open to the public \u2013 you don&#8217;t need to register for the conference.
