Photo by Stephanie Veto for LUAG.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At once intimate and collective, the <a href=\"https:\/\/crochetcoralreef.org\"><em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> <\/a>offers a unique model of art-making in the time of COVID. While the world shelters at home, three new <a href=\"https:\/\/crochetcoralreef.org\/satellitereefs\/\">S<em>atellite Reefs<\/em><\/a> are blooming into being. Under the auspices of the <strong>Helsinki Art Museum<\/strong>, thousands of Finnish crafters are crocheting corals for a display at the <strong>2021 Helsinki Biennial<\/strong>. Toronto crocheters have been called into action by the <strong>Ontario Science Center<\/strong>, where an <em>Ontario Satellite Reef<\/em> will be shown alongside a major exhibition of the IFF&#8217;s own crochet reefs. And at the <strong>University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign<\/strong>\u00a0the <em>Urbana-Champaign Satellite Reef <\/em>will feature a &#8220;day-glow&#8221; black-light sub-reef. By collectively mirroring the quiet productivity of the living reefs we emulate, we crochet &#8220;reefers&#8221; are building works of art that call attention to the crisis of global warming while also offering an alternative vision for what art-making can be \u2013 communal, humble, joyous, hand-made, and attuned to the webs of life.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/helsinkibiennaali.fi\/en\/story\/helsinki-to-get-its-own-coral-reef-in-the-form-of-an-artwork\/\">Helsinki Satellite Reef<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/helsinkibiennaali.fi\/en\/\">Helsinki Biennial <\/a>and Helsinki Art Museum (Finland).
