{"id":1799,"date":"2016-02-15T17:54:07","date_gmt":"2016-02-16T01:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/?p=1799"},"modified":"2016-02-16T20:44:46","modified_gmt":"2016-02-17T04:44:46","slug":"crochet-coral-reef-turns-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/news\/crochet-coral-reef-turns-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Crochet Coral Reef turns 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The IFF&#8217;s <em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> project is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the announcement of two new forthcoming exhibitions: one\u00a0in Spring 2017 at the <strong>University of California, Santa Cruz;\u00a0<\/strong>the other at a soon-to-be announced location for Fall 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade the <em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> project has evolved into one of the largest participatory art and science endeavors on the planet and \u2013 we are proud to say \u2013 one of the very few that specifically brings science and mathematics to women.<\/p>\n<p>With its\u00a0unique nexus of mathematics, handicraft, community art practice and environmentalism the <em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> project opens a window into STEM subjects for women around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbuDhabi-wide-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1810\" src=\"http:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbuDhabi-wide-copy-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"AbuDhabi-wide copy\" width=\"640\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbuDhabi-wide-copy-1024x341.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theiff.org\/current\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbuDhabi-wide-copy-300x100.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the past 10 years, more than two million people have visited\u00a0<em>Crochet Coral Reef<\/em> exhibitions, including at the Hayward Gallery in London, Science Gallery in Dublin, Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and the Smithsonian&#8217;s National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. In 2015, the <em>Reef<\/em> was exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, alongside the Leonardo da Vinci Leicester Codex.<\/p>\n<p>More than 8000 women in a dozen countries on 5 continents have participated with us in making an ever-evolving wooly archipelago of community-based Satellite Reefs<em>. <\/em>This\u00a0ongoing socio-artistic happening simultaneously engages women with the foundations of geometry and the problems of climate change while calling forth their creative energies.
